Lions of Akagera National Park

Lions of Akagera National Park  : For more than 15 years in Akagera national park, the lions were extinct in the park because of a number of reasons like the 1994 Rwanda genocide which led to the mass killing of the tutsis in Rwanda and for the tutsis that fled the country to run away from the mass slaughter however after the genocide, a number of tutsis that had fled to the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Congo and Tanzania came back to the country but because a number of property were destroyed and the fact that the tutsi were pastoralists, they had no land to graze their cattle and also settle which led some of them to encroach on Akagera national park and because e of the competition on the land by both the people and the wild animals especially the lions which were preying on the animals it led them to kill the lions hence their extinction in the park.

With the efforts of the Rwanda development board and the African parks to promote tourism and the need for sustainable tourism in Akagera national park, in 2015, a total of seven lions were translocated from south Africa and re introduced to Akagera national park and also in 2017 two male lions were also transferred from south Africa and this has to date led to the increase of the lions in the park and with the rhinos that were also introduced in the Akagera which led to the completing of the big five animals in Rwanda.
