Activities in Akagera National Park are the amazing ventures in which travelers can engage when they visit the park in order to spice up their tour. Akagera national park is known for the big five animals that is the African elephant, the rhino, leopard, lion, and buffalo which are among the many attractions that can be seen within the park. Aside from the big five animals, the park boasts of the well-spread beautiful savannah throughout the park which is used as food for animals like the impala, gazelles, Uganda Kob, Antelopes and many other herbivores in the park. Visiting the park will open a world of amazing experiences and attractions where you will see a number of water bodies like Lake Ihema, Akagera River, different swamps among other attractions in the park that will offer amazing experiences to ensure you have the best time during your Rwanda tour.

Activities in Akagera national park 

Game drives: This is one of the top Activities in Akagera National Park. Among the most rewarding activities in the park are the game drives where you will see a number of animals in the park, for example, the early riser like the different species of antelopes, zebras among other species that are usually seen in the morning game drives. You will have a chance to see the sun rising in the morning since the activity happens early morning before dawn, but as the sun starts rising, you will see a number of animals coming from their hiding places where they slept in the night to catch a bite early morning. 

For tourists interested in watching animals in the wild hunting, then you should participate in the nocturnal game drives where you will see a number of animals trying to catch prey, for example, the lions, the leopard hunting for prey which is used as dinner, hyenas can also be seen moving in groups to catch prey which is an intense but exciting moment at the same time.

Boat cruise: With the boat cruise in the park expect a lot of fun that you will experience. With the boat cruises, you can go for the scheduled boat cruises or you can go decide to pay an extra cost to hire out the boat for your different purposes like engagement ceremonies, the need for privacy among other reasons to hire a boat.

The boat cruise will be around water bodies in the park like Lake Shakani, Lake Ihema and others where you will have amazing experiences. In Akagera national park there are two different boat cruises you can participate in the morning and the evening boat where you will have amazing experiences in either of the cruises. In the morning boat cruise, you will see herbivores grazing in the plains, for instance, the zebras, the impalas, and many others. You will also see a number of bird species, for instance, water birds like the African Fish Eagle, African jacana, great cormorant, America dipper, and Billon’s crake among other bird species you will also see amphibian species like the Crocodiles hippos and buffalos will also be seen swimming in the water.

The evening boat cruise will offer magnificent views of the park where you will have a chance watching the sunset, you will also see crocodiles sunbathing as they wait patiently to catch herbivores that try to quench their thirst in the water, you will also see elephants, other herbivores taking their last bites for the day, many carnivores are seen during the evening boat cruise where they are seen spying on the herbivores in order to catch their luck in hunting them down for food.

Sportfishing: Sportfishing is a rewarding activity where at the end of the entertaining activity, you will get a fish as a token for your engagement in the activity. In the park, sport fishing is carried out on Lake Ihema, lake Shakani where you will find different types of fish. Interesting about the activity, you will be able to see a number of other attractions during the activity, for instance, the water birds like the African Fish Eagle, African jacana, great cormorant, America dipper, and Billon’s crake which will be an amazing adventure while in the park. Other attractions that can be seen include the animal species within the plains grazing in the park and many other attractions in the park.

Birding: The park is a habitat to a number of bird species that can be seen within the swamps and the vegetation of the park where they establish their nests. The park is a home to over 400 bird species where you can see a number of water birds as well on the different water bodies in the park looking for food. some of the water birds that can be seen in the park include the African fish Eagle, the open billed stork, the egrets, cormorants, Senegal lapwings, African darter that are seen on lake Shakani and Ihema. 

While you carry out birding in the park you will see the endangered shoe bill stork which can be seen in the swamp catching fish other bird species that can be seen within the park include the Hamerkop, Caruthers’s cisticola, pied crow, black-headed weaver, fan-tailed widow bird, violet’s black weaver, long-crested Eagle and so on making the park the ultimate birders destination with the different bird species that can be see within it.

Nature walks: While in the park, you can also participate in nature walks around the park in order to have an amazing experience while in the park. During the nature walks, you will have amazing experiences where you will have the time to see a number of attractions like the water bodies, where you will see the different animal species quenching their thirst from the water, a number of bird species can also be seen while carrying out the guided nature walks. 

Cultural encounters: You can also participate in cultural tours around akagera national park where you will visit the Humure refugee village where you will find people that settled in Rwanda after the political instability that happened in Tanzania their native homeland. On reaching the Humure refugee village you will be welcomed by a guide that will take you through the lives of the refugees in the village.  You will be taught how to make different local dishes, making ghee among other dishes. You will also participate in pottery where you will learn how to make cooking pots, plates with clay.
