Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up from and Drive to Gisenyi.
On day 1 of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, you will be picked up by our guide from Kigali City or Kigali International Airport and embark on your drive to cross into Congo to Goma. You will stop for a cup of coffee then continue to Goma border. Check-in with the tourism office strategically located at the Grand Barrier Border Post to receive the Gorilla and Volcano permit that’s to be presented at the beginning of every trek. There you will be transferred to Mikeno Lodge
Day 2: Virunga Gorilla Trekking in Congo
On the 2nd day of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, after an early morning breakfast at your hotel, your first meal of the day – Breakfast and report to Bukima patrol with your passport and gorilla trekking permit in Virunga National Park for registration and briefing. After the check-in and verification, you will head into the forest with your ranger guide and expect to hike for 1 to 3 hours until you find the mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park. When you get to see them, you will be in awe inspired by their huge size and gentle nature as you watch them go about their daily business. You will spend an hour with them and head back to the camp enjoy a late lunch and have the rest of the day at leisure, including time for nature walks and bird watching. Return to your accommodation.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park via Lake Kivu
On the 3rd day of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, after breakfast, you will exit the democratic republic of Congo and head to Volcanoes National Park. You may have a brief stopover at Lake Kivu for lunch or sightseeing then further connect to your hotel. Dinner and overnight at Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking and transfer to Kigali
On the 4th day of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, an early morning breakfast will be served, and drive to the park headquarters. You will take part in the briefing session and go for Golden Monkey trekking. Tracking is done in Volcanoes National Park, but less strenuous compared to Gorilla trekking. It lasts 2 to 5 hours. After the trek, have lunch and then connect to Kigali for dinner and overnight at Des Milles Colline Hotel
Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park and Ihema Boat Cruise.
On the 5th day of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, you will be met by your driver guide at your agreed location in Kigali to transfer to Akagera National Park where you will arrive in time to participate in the afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema where you will see game hippopotamuses, Crocodiles, and many bird species like the endangered shoe bill stork, African Kingfishers catching their prey from the Lake that live around the lake and the surrounding swamps. Transfer to your pack for dinner and overnight stay at Karenge bush camp(budget) Akagera game lodge (mid-range)
Day 6: Full-day game drive and transfer to Kigali.
On the last day of the 6 Days Virunga, Volcanoes, and Akagera National Park Safari, rise early and go for a game drive with great anticipation of seeing the different animals like the herbivores, the big five animals in Rwanda which rise early to graze, and predators looking for their early morning kill. After the game drive, return to connect with your driver guide to embark on your transfer back to Kigali. If you didn’t have a city tour on the first day, you may have it on this day before you are dropped off in Kigali or at the airport as you may advise.
